The name champagne is not protected as a trademark, but it is a protected designation of origin (PDO). A PDO receives comprehensive protection, even broader than a registered trademark.

You’ve got yourself a problem, especially if you choose a name in the alcoholic arena that slightly rubs against champagne. So this is the story of how McGregor went down for the count on November the 18th: the European Trademark Office didn’t award Champ Champ trademark registration for alcoholic beverages.
